Even though the swift metamorphosis in organisational structure and planning which gave employees access to all the tools they needed to work from home was a bit sudden for many employers, everyone soon settled in, and it became evident to many office-based organisations that employees could be productive and focused when not in the office, and in many cases, even more so. Remote work is appealing to millions of employees and job seekers for a reason: It comes with many benefits. Highlighted below are the top five advantages of remote jobs.
- Increased productivity
Remote workers often enjoy higher levels of productivity due to the absence of distractions in a traditional office setting. When workers work from home part-time or full-time, they have the freedom to set their own schedule and work in an environment that suits them [1].
This flexibility means you can take breaks as needed, avoiding burnout from being stuck in an office for eight hours straight. This helps workers return to their work feeling more energized and motivated. Additionally, with fewer distractions and interruptions, like chatty coworkers and unnecessary meetings, you can focus on your tasks and complete your work more efficiently. Productivity is essential to the growth of an organization. And productive employees mean greater efficiency and more profit [2].
Remote workers reported stable or increased productivity while working remotely compared to in an office, according to a Great Place to Work report. During 2020, the steepest productivity improvements came in April and May, during the height of the pandemic. Much of this was due to the elimination of daily commutes and lengthy in-person meetings [3].
In Owl Labs report, 90% of remote workers said they were equal to or more productive working remotely than in the office. And 55% say they work more hours when working from home than they do in the office.
Teleworkers are an average of 35-40% more productive than their office counterparts, and have measured an output increase of at least 4.4% [4].

2. No more commuting
Working from home implies that workers will no longer waste many hours in traffic jams or subway delays. Globally, remote workers save an average of 72 minutes per day on commuting time. In the US, employees save an average of 55 minutes per day.
Ravichandran [1] is of the opinion that work eliminates the need for daily commutes, which saves time. Also, it results in substantial savings on fuel, parking fees, public transportation tickets, and vehicle maintenance expenses.
3. Cost Reduction
Both employees and employers can enjoy significant cost savings with remote work. Employees save on transportation costs. They also ditch expenses related to work attire and the purchase of meals outside the home.
Global Workplace Analytics estimates that employers can save up to $11,000 annually for every employee who works remotely half the time. Businesses can also benefit from lower overhead costs, such as office space rentals, utilities, and maintenance. These cost savings can be reinvested in growth initiatives, employee development, or improving work conditions.Cost savings through remote working[5]
4. Flexibility and work-life balance
Another turn on for remote jobs is the flexibility of it's structure. Remote jobs provide workers with the option to create a comfortable and ergonomic workspace. Working from home provides ultimate flexibility for employees, especially if work hours aren’t strict.
Employees get the opportunity to schedule work duties, meetings, and appointments around their personal lives and can complete tasks at their own pace. This gives workers full control over their work-life balance, and make them less likely to feel burned out or overwhelmed with work. Furthermore, they can spend more time with family and friends, which may not be realisable when they spend so much time in an office.

5. Improved health and well-being
The stresses that come along with commuting to and from work each day, office politics, micromanagement from leaders, excessive meetings, work-life imbalances, and schedule conflicts can lead to increased health problems. When working from home, much of this is reduced or eliminated, which increases job satisfaction and overall wellness.
Remote jobs also cuts down physical contact which results in less exposure to illnesses. Moreso, it gives employees the ease of caring for a health issue or disability. In Owl Labs’s report, 70% of remote employees say virtual meetings are less stressful than in-person meetings. And roughly 75% say working from home makes them happier and improves their mental health.Health implications of working from home[7]
If employees are equally productive in remote settings, why ask them to return to the office? All things being equal, remote work is cheaper and more convenient than commuting.
